Mix and Match Flea Market Finds

Flea market finds are like little treasures unearthed by the patient prospector.  We are always searching for that perfect new project that we can invest our creative energies in outside of our work environments.  If you need to refresh the look in your breakfast nook, this could be the project you are looking for.  Mix and match flea market chairs which you can paint a common color, and then cover with fabulous fabric to bring the chairs together.  This look can bring so much interest and detail into a new area in your home.

First, you need to decide how many chairs you need.  Then hit the flea markets, garage sales, thift shops, and grandma’s basement to find the

ladder back, spindle back, baroque scrollwork, and many other possible designs to begin your project with.  Once you have your chairs, you will need the right tools and supplies.  Fabric, staple gun, painter’s tape, paint, sandpaper, scissors, tacks, and glue will definitely need to be in your toolbox before you begin.

The frame of the chair should be sanded, painted, and finished off with a sealcoat of your choice.  My preference is a nice glossy finish over a bright color.  When you have the frame finished, you can start on the covering the seat of the chair.  The cushioning and fabric choice should be able to withstand the anticipated daily use of the chairs.

100% polyester or a cotton/poly blend could be a good choice.  These fabrics are typically heavy duty, and the pattern is woven.  K7746 Nectar  would be ideal for a white or black chair or K2143 from the Tempo collection could be a good option for a chair that is painted a bright color.

The key to success with this project is to have fun, and don’t stress.  Its only paint and fabric which is easy to keep changing to keep up with today’s trends.
