{"id":1828,"date":"2015-08-18T10:47:33","date_gmt":"2015-08-18T15:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.kovifabrics.com\/?p=1828"},"modified":"2024-08-15T22:14:43","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T03:14:43","slug":"sewing-with-suede-fabric","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kovifabrics.com\/blog\/sewing-with-suede-fabric\/","title":{"rendered":"Sewing With Suede: Tips and Tricks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Buttery-soft suede is a popular fall fashion fabric, but it&#8217;s also perfect year-round for furniture. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kovifabrics.com\/category\/suede\">Kovi Fabrics suede<\/a> comes in colors and patterns that work in any room, so it&#8217;s an excellent choice for your next weekend sewing project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some things to keep in mind when working with suede:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Select Your Project Carefully<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Suede can be challenging to work with if you&#8217;re new to sewing because it has some stretch. It&#8217;s not as easy to sew precisely\u00a0as with other fabrics. Start with something simple, like a pillow cover or reupholstered bar stool seat, and move on when you are more comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use Pattern Weights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Pins are the standard in holding fabric down, but they don&#8217;t always work. This goes for other heavy fabrics, too. Because suede is so thick, it&#8217;s best to use pattern weights. You can also use binder clips to hold the pieces together when sewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check Your Sewing Machine Needle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re new to sewing, you might not know which needle sizes work best for different fabrics. A leather needle for sewing thicker fabrics will work best for sewing your suede pieces. Be sure to change out the needle if you&#8217;ve been doing\u00a0many\u00a0projects; the needle won&#8217;t work as well after several hours of sewing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also want to set the needle to 10-12 stitches per inch or longer because shorter stitches can weaken the fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pay Attention to the Nap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Suede has a nap, so you must consider that when cutting and placing your fabric. If you want the darker, richer suede color, situate the fabric so the nap goes up. For a frosted variation on the color, the nap should go down. Whichever you choose, make sure the fabric goes in the same direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proper Care and Cleaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Synthetic suede is less prone to stretching and wrinkling and is easier to care for than animal-skin suede. Genuine suede should only be spot-treated for cleaning.
