If you’ve got an ugly old sofa you’re dying to get rid of, consider this: a sofa slipcover can make your couch look brand new for a fraction of the cost of going out and shopping for a new one. Slipcovers can be pricey, so making your own with the fabric you want is more affordable.
Sounds complicated? It’s not. You don’t have to be a sewing machine expert to master the sofa slipcover. All you’ll need is fabric, pins, and a sewing machine. This beginner’s version is a quicker, less complicated guide for a more straightforward job:
Step 1: Drape Your Fabric
First, drape your fabric in sections and pin it over the couch. Line up the edge of the fabric to the top of the sofa. You will want to pin and mold it to each area. Look for the original seams on the couch, which will guide you to where to put your seams.
Step 2: Pin the Fabric
Starting with an arm, pin each section of fabric together. Ensure the fabric drapes over the furniture and that there are no loose or tight areas. If the fabric is long, fold the excess parts over the top or bottom of the sofa and mark where you’ll need to cut.
Step 3: Sew
Create a sewing station near the sofa with your sewing machine and fabric. Don’t be afraid to break it up into a few pieces for larger areas of the couch. You can use three smaller fabric panels rather than trying to get the whole back of the sofa in one. You can use one large panel if you’re comfortable and have enough fabric.
Start by sewing the larger pieces. Sew one section of the slipcover first, then fit it onto the couch and ensure it looks how you want it to. Test fit the piece when you’re done.
Step 4: Repeat
Repeat that process for the couch arms, pinning and sewing each section and ensuring it fits. Trim the excess fabric. If you’re using a patterned fabric, remember to accommodate pattern repeats. Always test the piece around the cushion arms before you’re done.
Step 5: Test the Slipcover
Once done, put the entire slipcover over the couch. Fit the cover the correct way and also inside out. Check for any areas you might have to fix up. Have a seam ripper, needle, and thread handy for this step. After you ensure the slipcover fits, you can add any accents.
A Sofa Slipcover Is the Perfect DIY Project
After you have the slipcover sewn to your liking, you’ll have a custom look to your couch that can easily be removed, washed, and changed out if you choose to use a new fabric later. If you haven’t had much sewing experience and are nervous about making the slipcover, choose a cheaper or more durable fabric.
